SumUp Register is the complete POS system in the SumUp family - an all-in-one setup with two screens that replaces the traditional cash till. One screen, at 13.3 inches, faces you behind the counter. The other, at 8 inches, faces the customer and doubles as the payment terminal. Register comes with free POS software pre-installed, and lets you take both cards and cash, keep track of sales, staff and inventory - all in one place. You pay a flat 1.49% transaction fee per card payment, with no monthly fee and no lock-in. If you want to see the whole range, you'll find SumUp's payment terminals at Elkjøp.
In this guide we explain what SumUp Register is, how the two screens work together, where it fits next to SumUp Solo Lite and SumUp Terminal, what it costs to run, and how to get one. In short: Register is for you if you run a fixed counter and want to replace an old cash register with one system - not just a card reader.
What SumUp Register is - in short
SumUp Register is an all-in-one POS system with two touchscreens: one for you and one for the customer, where the customer screen is also the payment terminal. It is the only true POS system among the three SumUp products we cover here.
Register is the top model in the SumUp family. While SumUp Solo Lite is a small card reader you run from your phone, and SumUp Terminal is a standalone handheld device with a built-in receipt printer, Register is a fixed till solution built for the counter. It stands on a base, connects to mains power and WiFi, and runs SumUp's own POS software, included at no licence cost.
You can use Register to take cards, contactless payments, Apple Pay and Google Pay - and cash. At the same time the system handles your sales overview, inventory, staff and real-time reports, so you don't have to stitch together several solutions yourself. In practice you replace a traditional cash register, a card terminal and a spreadsheet with one system that talks to itself and keeps the numbers tidy all day.
Two screens that work together
What sets Register apart from the rest of the SumUp range is the two screens. Each has its own job:
- The merchant screen (13.3 inches, HD) faces you. Here you enter orders, look up products, follow the day's sales and run the rest of the POS system.
- The customer screen (8 inches, HD) faces the customer and works as the payment terminal. The customer sees what they are paying for, can add a tip, and pays by card, contactless or phone right on the screen.
The two screens are joined by a magnetic connector, and the whole unit weighs around 3.2 kilos. Register needs power from a wall socket and a WiFi network to work - this is a fixed counter solution, not a mobile device for the road.
The customer-facing screen makes payment clearer: the customer follows the line items and the amount on their own screen instead of leaning over the counter to see yours. For many cafés and shops that means a faster queue.
Register, Terminal or Solo Lite - where does it fit?
SumUp Register is the right choice when you run a fixed counter and want to gather payments, inventory and reports in one POS system - not for selling on the move.
SumUp has three main products for taking payment, and they solve different needs. The simplest way to see them is as a staircase: from the smallest card reader to the full POS system.
| SumUp Solo Lite | SumUp Terminal | SumUp Register | |
|---|---|---|---|

Choose SumUp Solo Lite at Elkjøp if you just need to take cards through your phone at the lowest possible price. Choose SumUp Terminal if you want a standalone device with a built-in receipt printer you can carry with you. And choose Register when you run a fixed counter and want the whole POS system gathered in one place. The three products don't rule each other out - many start with a card reader and move up to Register as the business grows. If you're unsure, you'll find the full comparison of Solo Lite, Terminal and Register in a separate guide.
Everything you run from one POS system
Register comes with SumUp's free POS software pre-installed, at no licence cost. That means you get a whole POS system from day one, not just a device for taking payment. Among the features:
- Card and cash payments - chip and PIN, contactless, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
- Inventory management with low-stock alerts.
- Staff and user profiles so several people can work the same till, each with their own access.
- Real-time sales reports so you can see how the day is going, and what sells best.
- Loyalty programme (SumUp Local) and appointment booking (SumUp Bookings) built into the same system.
- Kitchen orders for hospitality and barcode scanning for retail.
On top of that, you can build out Register with accessories like a receipt printer, cash drawer, barcode scanner and self-service screen - all sold separately, so you only pay for what you need.
Register also comes with built-in support for Norway's cash register rules at no extra cost. Under the Norwegian Cash Register Systems Act (kassasystemloven), a requirement for bookkeeping-obligated businesses since 1 January 2019, your POS system must carry a product declaration from the supplier:
"The cash register system must have a product declaration from the supplier stating that the system meets the requirements of the Cash Register Systems Act and regulations." - Skatteetaten (the Norwegian Tax Administration)
If you run a cash business in Norway, you should always confirm that the POS system meets the requirements before you put it to use - you, as the business owner, are responsible for keeping the till in order. We go through the requirements in more detail in the guide on SumUp Register and the cash register law.
How you use Register depends a little on the trade. In hospitality you can send orders straight to the kitchen, split bills and keep track of tables - we take a closer look at the best POS system for cafés and restaurants in a separate guide. In retail you scan barcodes, watch your stock and connect a cash drawer. A hairdresser or clinic can combine appointment booking, payment and loyalty in the same system. The point is you adapt one POS system to your operation, instead of buying a new solution for every task.
What does SumUp Register cost to run?
SumUp Register costs 1.49% per card payment, with no monthly fee and no lock-in. Betalinger Plus lowers the rate to 0.79%. The hardware is a one-off purchase.
As with the rest of the SumUp family, you only pay a flat transaction fee when you actually sell something - no hidden lock-in and no monthly fee on the free POS software:
- Transaction fee: 1.49% per card payment.
- No monthly fee and no lock-in.
- To lower the rate, the Betalinger Plus subscription (349 kr/month) can bring it down to 0.79% per payment.
A worked example: if you sell 30,000 kr by card over a month, the transaction fee comes to 447 kr (30,000 × 1.49%). Sell nothing in a month and you pay nothing either - there is no fixed base fee.
The hardware itself you buy as a one-off purchase. SumUp Register is not yet part of the SumUp range at Elkjøp in Norway, so we don't quote a fixed price here. Check the current price and availability at Elkjøp before you decide.
One thing worth knowing if you sell a lot to Norwegian consumers: SumUp routes Norwegian debit cards as Visa or Mastercard, not over BankAxept. BankAxept accounted for 49% of transactions with Norwegian cards in 2024 (Norges Bank), but for most small businesses that makes no practical difference. If you run a shop with very high card volume, though, you should work out the total cost with the 1.49% fee against a traditional bank terminal that supports BankAxept.

No. Like the rest of the SumUp family, Register routes Norwegian debit cards as Visa or Mastercard, not over BankAxept. BankAxept accounted for 49% of transactions with Norwegian cards in 2024 (Norges Bank), but for most small businesses the difference plays little role in practice. Register still takes contactless payments, Apple Pay, Google Pay and cash. If, on the other hand, you run a shop with very high card volume, you should work out the total cost with the 1.49% fee against a traditional bank terminal that supports BankAxept.
Is SumUp Register a good fit for a café, shop or salon?
Yes. SumUp Register is built for businesses with a fixed counter, and suits cafés, restaurants, bakeries, shops, salons and clinics well. With two screens, inventory management, staff handling, a loyalty programme (SumUp Local) and appointment booking (SumUp Bookings), you gather your operation into one POS system. If instead you work mostly on the move or sell on the go, a payment terminal like SumUp Solo Lite or SumUp Terminal is usually a better and more affordable choice.
